Catherine B - Homeschool Tutor In White Plains NY - Local or Online
I received my undergraduate degrees from the Rhode Island School of Design, where I earned a Bachelor's in Fine Arts and Bachelor of Architecture. After having an incredibly fulfilling and successful career in Architecture, I wanted to share my passion for learning and collaboration with the next generation. While raising my family, I decided to change careers and become a teacher, earning certifications in both Early Childhood Education and Secondary Mathematics, from Manhattanville College. I believe that by sharing my incredible learning journeys with my students, I can begin to inspire them to take risks and spark their path of learning. Teaching requires patience, understanding, compassion, and enthusiasm - all skills that I am dedicated to continuously provide to my students. My goals for my students are simple. I look to help children foster critical thinking skills, develop unique learning strategies, and build confidence in their own learning. My approach advances children's curiosities and maintains a positive experience toward both learning and behavior. I provide and adapt lessons that are meaningful to each child, using personalized student-centered activities. By taking full advantage of teachable moments while working with my students, they help to make their learning journey more meaningful. And while I strongly believe in teaching students the traditional basics to provide a strong foundation for learning, I also use games, puzzles, and activities to help reinforce and expand upon this knowledge base. My STEM background has helped me to strike a balance with the appropriate use of technology, especially during these unprecedented times. Accordingly, I will utilize platforms like Zoom, Skype, or Facetime in conjunction with other applications that afford me a greater opportunity to provide more interactive engagement opportunities with my students.
Experience
I have taught in various Middle School settings over the past several years. My experience in Danbury, CT, was by far the most formative for me. I designed and implemented a problem-based learning curriculum to help meet the learning needs of a wide variety of students. I also designed and implemented a STEM curriculum that involved numerous aspects of engineering, which is something that comes naturally to me with my professional background. Inherently, I helped to develop inquiry minded students who enjoyed not only mathematics but problem-solving and perseverance. Given my background and passions, I would welcome the opportunity to help your child ignite their learning journey to a better tomorrow.
